The coastal villages and harbours of Paxos are justly famous and something of a “Mecca” for yachtsmen. But perhaps the “real” Paxos is to be found inland, in the ‘green heart’ of the island especially around the small village and former capital of Magazia. The six hundred year old ancient olives trees that spread out from here are still harvested for the golden oil that is considered one of the best in Greece.

It is a working landscape of great beauty and tranquillity, outside the harvesting season in the autumn. The different family groves, separated by drystone walls, are all linked by a network of paths, perfect for gentle exploration. Abandoned settlements, their ruined walls often covered by sweet-smelling wild clematis, are reminders of a time when the population of Paxos was much larger. Naturally the sea is never far away, and well marked trails lead to the famous cliffs of Erimitis that change colour as the sun sets, or the tiny church of Agia Apostoli, perched on a high promontory.

Although Magazia is hardly more than a hamlet, it does have a taverna, bakery and mini market, conveniently situated in close proximity to the delightful Villa Nika. Enjoying spectacular sea views this villa, designed and built to complement the traditional local architecture, makes an excellent base for both quiet relaxation and exploration of the island. Cosmopolitan Gaios is only a short drive away, the road to the pretty villages and harbours of Lakka and Loggos to the west, and the other beaches on the east coast, runs through the village.

Built by Thomas, the owner of Villa Irida, Villa Nika, has been exquisitely furnished throughout to the same high standard. The interior of the house has been designed for ease of living and comfort. The first floor consists of the master bedroom with double bed and en suite bathroom. On the ground floor is the main open plan living area with a fully equipped kitchen and a twin bedroom with en suite shower. Outside is the large sun terrace with stunning sea and countryside views, a swimming pool and barbecue area.

The Villa Nika is perfectly located on this beautiful island, quiet and secluded but close enough to enjoy all the island has to offer.
